Agnes Water, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Agnes Water is a small coastal town on the Discovery Coast in central Queensland, just south of the better-known Town of 1770 and roughly midway between Bundaberg and Gladstone. The surrounding country lies within the lands of the Gurang people, and the locality is associated with the Meerooni. The town is generally said to take its name from the Agnes, a schooner wrecked nearby in the nineteenth century. Long isolated by rough roads, it grew slowly into a relaxed holiday spot known for its surf beach, national parks and turtle-nesting season. Sealed access and steady tourism have since made it a favourite stop for travellers exploring the stretch of coast around Seventeen Seventy.
