Auburn (SA), SA

Auburn is a historic town on the southern edge of the Clare Valley, in the Mid North of South Australia, about 111 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Horrocks Highway. The district was surveyed in 1840, a land grant was taken up in 1849, and the Rising Sun Inn, the first building, went up in 1850. The name is generally said to derive from a line in a poem by Oliver Goldsmith that celebrates a village named Auburn. The town is the birthplace of the poet C. J. Dennis, born in 1876, and is lined with handsome heritage stone buildings. It marks the southern end of the Riesling Trail, a rail-trail through the vineyards, and the old railway station now serves as a cellar door. Wine, heritage and tourism sustain the town today.
