Barraganyatti, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Barraganyatti is a small rural locality in New South Wales, in Kempsey Shire on the Mid North Coast. The ABS 2021 Census (SAL10210) recorded 150 people living in Barraganyatti — one of the smallest localities in the ABS Suburbs and Localities dataset. The census counted 65 private dwellings, 41 families, and an average household size of 2.6 people. At that scale, individual households can shift percentages noticeably from one census to the next, and the data should be read accordingly. A few things stand out. The population is older than state and national norms: median age is 45, against 39 in New South Wales and 38 nationally, with notable concentrations in the 65–69 and 70–74 age groups. Outright home ownership is high at 64.2%, more than double the NSW rate of 31.5%, consistent with a long-settled rural community. The dominant industry — fruit and tree nut growing at 10.4% of employed residents, compared to essentially zero across NSW — places the locality in the horticultural country of the Macleay Valley hinterland. Labour force participation runs lower than the state norm (43.4% versus 58.7%), and median household income of $1,149 a week is well under the NSW figure of $1,829. Every dwelling recorded was a separate house, and just 13.2% of households rent — roughly one-third of the NSW rate. There is no Wikipedia article for Barraganyatti; the ABS QuickStats page (SAL10210) and Kempsey Shire records are the primary sources for this locality.

We’d rather leave these open than publish a number we can’t stand behind. Here’s where each one stands.

  • SchoolsNot scored yet — school performance (ACARA / ICSEA) needs a data-reuse licence cleared before we can publish it.
  • SafetyNot scored yet — Australia has no single open crime dataset and safety data carries defamation and legal care, so it is gated pending a go/no-go and will be data-only when added.
