Batlow, NSW

Batlow is a cool-climate town in the South West Slopes of New South Wales, perched about 775 metres up on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, some 33 kilometres south of Tumut and around 90 kilometres west of Canberra. The Wiradjuri people lived in the area before European settlement, and the town is said to take its name from a Mr Batlow who surveyed a townsite in the 1850s. Gold first drew people to nearby Reedy Creek in 1854; the post office, opened in 1873, was renamed Batlow in 1889. Today the district is one of Australia's best-known apple-growing regions, supplying around a tenth of the national crop, and celebrates its orchards with an annual Apple Blossom Festival.
