Beauty Point, TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Beauty Point is a town on the western bank of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania, about 45km north of Launceston. It began as the first deep-water port on the Tamar, and in the 1870s its two precincts, Port Lempriere and Ilfracombe, served the iron industry, including a blast furnace. The Ilfracombe post office opened in 1903 and was renamed Beauty Point the following year. The port still anchors the town, which is home to a campus of the Australian Maritime College, while tourist attractions such as Seahorse World and Platypus House draw visitors to the waterfront. Beauty Point is also a finishing point for yacht races and the gruelling Australian Three Peaks Race.
