Blackwood (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Blackwood is a leafy suburb in the Adelaide Hills, in the City of Mitcham south-east of the South Australian capital. Its name is thought to come either from the Australian blackwood wattle that grows in the nearby Mount Lofty Ranges or from a dark-barked local eucalypt. Settlement gathered pace after the railway arrived, with Blackwood railway station opening in 1883 on the line between Adelaide and the eastern states, and housing was subdivided around the same time. A soldiers' memorial was raised in 1921 at the prominent five-ways roundabout that still anchors the town centre. One of the suburb's best-loved features is the Wittunga Botanic Garden, begun as a private garden in 1901 and now known for its Australian and South African plants. Blackwood is also home turf of the hip hop group the Hilltop Hoods.
