Bondi Beach, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Bondi Beach is a coastal suburb in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs, about 7 km east of the city centre and part of the Waverley local government area. It is built around its namesake beach — a roughly one-kilometre arc of sand that faces south and is sheltered at its northern end by the headland at Ben Buckler. The suburb is best known for that beach and its surrounds: the Bondi Icebergs winter-swimming club and ocean pool (established 1929), the heritage-listed Bondi Pavilion, and the clifftop Bondi-to-Coogee coastal walk, all of which draw residents and large numbers of visitors year-round. The name is generally recorded as coming from a word in the local Aboriginal (Dharawal) language describing the sound of water breaking over rocks.
