Bright (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Bright lies at the head of the Ovens Valley in north-east Victoria, about 319 metres above sea level and some 317 kilometres from Melbourne. Ringed by the Victorian Alps, it sits within easy reach of Mount Buffalo National Park and the alpine peaks of Feathertop, Bogong and Hotham, with the Ovens River and Morses Creek running through the town. First known as Morses Creek, it was renamed in 1861 after the British orator and reformer John Bright. Once a gold-rush settlement, Bright is now best loved for its blaze of European autumn colour, celebrated each year at the Bright Autumn Festival, and as a base for cycling, paragliding and winter skiing in the surrounding mountains.
