Cobram is a town on the Murray River in northern Victoria, about 246 kilometres north of Melbourne and facing its twin town of Barooga across the river in New South Wales. The Bangerang people lived along this stretch of the Murray long before Europeans arrived. A pastoral station was taken up here in 1845, but the town itself dates from 1888, when it was surveyed and the railway arrived. Dairying and fruit-growing have long been the mainstays of the district, helped by the irrigated Murray flats. Cobram is best known for its sandy river beaches, including Thompsons Beach, which is said to be the largest inland beach in Australia, and the river is spanned by a historic bridge opened in 1902.
