Coburg, VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Coburg is an inner suburb on the northern side of Melbourne, about 8 kilometres from the central business district, in the City of Merri-bek. The Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation are the traditional owners of the land along Merri Creek. Surveyed by Robert Hoddle in the late 1830s, the village was first named Pentridge, after a place in Dorset, England, and was renamed Coburg in 1870, after the royal house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, around the time the Duke of Edinburgh visited the colony. Bluestone was quarried here, and Coburg Lake Reserve, formed by a weir on Merri Creek, became a popular picnic spot. The suburb is famously diverse, and its stretch of Sydney Road, lined with kebab shops, patisseries and grocers from many cultures, has earned it the nickname 'Kebaburg'.
