Corowa, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Corowa is a historic town on the Murray River in the Riverina region of New South Wales, facing Wahgunyah in Victoria across the border and about 57 kilometres west of Albury. It is the largest town in the Federation Council area — a name that reflects its place in history, for it was here in the 1890s that a series of conferences helped pave the way to the federation of the Australian colonies in 1901. The district is the country of the Bangarang and Wiradjuri peoples, and the town's name is thought to come from a Wiradjuri word, perhaps meaning 'rocky river crossing'. Settled from the 1840s and proclaimed in 1858, Corowa is known today for its heritage John Foord Bridge and its riverside setting.
