Corryong, VIC

Corryong is a small town in the Upper Murray valley of north-east Victoria, about 120 kilometres east of Albury-Wodonga and close to the New South Wales border, in the Shire of Towong. It is best known as Man from Snowy River country: the local stockman Jack Riley, who lies buried in the Corryong cemetery, is widely held to have inspired Banjo Paterson's famous poem, and the town celebrates the connection each April with The Man from Snowy River Bush Festival. A post office opened here in 1874. Surrounded by mountain cattle country, Corryong today supports beef and dairy farming and a local timber industry, and serves as a gateway to the alpine high country nearby.
