Crookwell, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Crookwell is a cool-climate town on the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, in the Upper Lachlan Shire, about 45 kilometres north-west of Goulburn and a little over 100 kilometres from Canberra. It sits high — close to 900 metres above sea level — in the country of the Gundungurra people. Europeans settled the district from the 1820s, and the town, first known as Kiama, was renamed after the Crookwell River in the 1860s. The surrounding hills are renowned for potato growing, and Crookwell became home to what is described as New South Wales's first wind farm, its turbines a landmark on the surrounding ridgelines. Around 2,500 people live in the town today.
