Edithburgh, SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Edithburgh is a seaside town on the south-east tip of the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, on Salt Creek Bay about 220 kilometres from Adelaide by road. In the Narungga language the place is known as Pararmarati. The town was named after Edith, the wife of Governor Sir James Fergusson. Laid out in the 1870s, it grew as a port shipping grain, salt from the nearby salt lakes and gypsum. Today it is a quiet holiday town known for its historic jetty, regarded as one of the state's finest shore-diving spots for its leafy sea dragons and other marine life, and for its tidal seawater swimming pool. Troubridge Island lies just offshore, and a wind farm turns on the cliffs nearby.
