Eudunda, SA

Eudunda is a town in South Australia's Mid North, about 111 kilometres north-east of Adelaide. It lies within the traditional lands of the Ngadjuri people, and its name comes from an Aboriginal word said to mean sheltered water. Europeans arrived from the 1830s and the township was laid out in 1870; German Lutheran families became the main settlers, building St John's Lutheran Church, a flour mill that ran for more than a century, and Appelt's general store in 1874. From here the Eudunda Farmers Co-operative grew to run scores of stores across the state. The town is proudly remembered as the 1920 birthplace of the author and educator Colin Thiele, and it has produced several leading cricketers and footballers.
