Gladstone (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Gladstone is a town in the Mid North of South Australia, near the lower Flinders Ranges and about 210 kilometres north of Adelaide. It takes its name from the British statesman William Ewart Gladstone. The private township was laid out by Matthew Moorhouse in 1872, beside a government town called Booyoolie; in 1940 Booyoolie was renamed Gladstone to match its neighbour. The town became an important railway centre, with a rare three-gauge break-of-gauge junction where broad, standard and narrow gauge lines once met. It is home to what is described as the largest inland grain storage in the southern hemisphere. Other landmarks include the heritage-listed Gladstone Gaol and a Second World War RAAF inland aircraft fuel depot. Today it serves the surrounding grain-growing district.
