Glebe (NSW), NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Glebe is an inner-western suburb of Sydney, set barely three kilometres south-west of the central business district on a tongue of land all but encircled by Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay. Its name is a churchly inheritance: in 1790 Governor Arthur Phillip granted around 400 acres here to the Reverend Richard Johnson, chaplain of the First Fleet, as a glebe — land set aside to support a clergyman — and 'The Glebe' endured. Aboriginal people had lived across this country for thousands of years before British settlement. The suburb runs south to Parramatta Road and Broadway, with Ultimo, Annandale and Forest Lodge as neighbours, while Wentworth Park spreads over the reclaimed headwaters of Blackwattle Bay. It remains one of Sydney's most characterful inner-city pockets.
