Haberfield, NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Haberfield lies in the Inner West of Sydney, about six and a half kilometres west of the central business district and just south of Iron Cove. It is celebrated as one of the world's earliest planned garden suburbs, and the whole area is heritage-listed for its well-kept parks, tree-lined streets and fine Federation-era houses. The land was granted in 1803 and later held by the Ramsay family, who planted orchards and gave several streets their names. In 1901 the developer Richard Stanton bought part of the estate and laid out a model suburb of fresh air and gardens, designed to be free of lanes and slums. He named it Haberfield after a branch of his family. Its main street is Ramsay Street, and the suburb has long been associated with Sydney's Italian community.
