Hamilton (Vic.), VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Hamilton lies in the Western District of south-western Victoria, where the Glenelg and Henty highways meet, around 290 kilometres west of Melbourne and roughly 100 kilometres inland from Warrnambool. Promoting itself as a wool capital, the district is said to produce a sizeable share of the national wool clip, and sheep grazing has shaped the town since Charles Wedge took up the Grange run in 1839. A post office opened in 1844, the township was declared in 1851, the railway arrived in 1877, and Hamilton became a city in 1949. The name is generally credited to surveyor Henry Wade, after a family he knew. Today it is known for its botanic gardens, a well-regarded regional gallery, a transport museum and the annual Sheepvention show.
