Inglewood (Vic.), VIC

Inglewood is a historic gold town in central Victoria, on the Calder Highway about 185 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 45 kilometres from Bendigo. Gold was discovered here in 1859 and the rush that followed drew tens of thousands of diggers within a year; the town was proclaimed a municipality in 1861 and a borough in 1863. Eucalyptus-oil distilling later became a local speciality, and quartz mining still continues nearby. The heritage main street, the town hall with its chiming clock, a eucalyptus distillery museum and the granite boulders of nearby Kooyoora State Park recall that past. Inglewood was the birthplace of the airline founder Reg Ansett and of footballer Carji Greeves, the first Brownlow medallist.
