Kingswood is a residential and education-focused suburb in Sydney's far west, in the City of Penrith. It was originally known as Crossroads, after the meeting of the Great Western Highway and The Northern Road, and was renamed Kingswood in 1887 after the family of Governor Philip Gidley King, who had held land in the district. The railway, which reached the area in the 1860s, shaped its growth. Today Kingswood is best known as a centre of learning and services: it is home to a major campus of Western Sydney University, a large TAFE college, and the State Archives of New South Wales. Kingswood railway station on the Main Western line gives a direct run through Penrith and on towards the city, serving a young, settled local community.
