Koroit, VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Koroit is a town in western Victoria, about 18km north-west of Warrnambool and 272km west of Melbourne, set on the northern rim of Tower Hill, an extinct volcano. It lies in the country of the Eastern Maar people, and its name derives from the Koroitch Gundidj, a local Gunditjmara group. French explorers charted Tower Hill in 1802, the first European settler arrived in 1837, and the township was surveyed in 1857, when a wave of Irish immigrants settled the surrounding farmland and gave the town its lasting Irish character. It is now a dairying centre with one of Australia's largest milk-processing plants, and is known for its heritage streetscape, Tower Hill reserve and annual Irish Festival. Author Henry Handel Richardson lived here as a child.
