Lancefield, VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Lancefield is a town in the Macedon Ranges of central Victoria, about 69km north of Melbourne and 8km from Romsey. European squatters took up land here from 1837, and the township grew after its post office opened in 1860; its cooler elevation made it a summer retreat by the 1880s. The district's soils, among the most fertile in Victoria, long supported potatoes, cereals and grazing, and today vineyards are part of the local scene. Nearby Lancefield Swamp is a noted fossil site, preserving the bones of giant Ice Age kangaroos and wombats, and the explorers Burke and Wills camped in the area in 1860 on their ill-fated northward journey. The town remains a quiet gateway to the Macedon Ranges wine and food country.
