Lorne curls around Louttit Bay on Victoria's Great Ocean Road, about 140 kilometres south-west of Melbourne and backed by the forested Otway Ranges. Before British settlement the coast here was part of the traditional lands of the Gadubanud, also called the King Parrot people, of the Cape Otway country. The town was named in 1871 after the Marquess of Lorne, to mark his marriage to Queen Victoria's daughter, Princess Louise. Long a favourite summer escape, Lorne fills each January for the Pier to Pub ocean swim and is known for its waterfalls and bush walks. Erskine Falls, the lookouts at Teddy's, the pier, and the surrounding Great Otway National Park keep visitors coming year-round.
