Loxton, SA

Loxton is a town in the Riverland district of South Australia, set on the south bank of the River Murray about 246 kilometres east of Adelaide and roughly 41 kilometres south of Renmark. It sits on the lands of the Erawirung people. The town is a service centre for a productive irrigation district, and its visitor drawcards include the Loxton Historical Village, an open-air museum recreating early settler life, and the annual Loxton Gift athletics carnival. The railway line reached the town in 1914, helping open the surrounding country to closer farming. Today the district is known for its horticulture, growing citrus, wine grapes, almonds and stone fruit alongside grain crops out on the Murray Mallee. Irrigated agriculture remains the backbone of the local economy.
