Mannum, SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mannum sits on the west bank of the River Murray about 85 kilometres east of Adelaide, in the country of the Nganguruku people of the wider Ngaiawang group. The town has a special place in river history: in 1852 William Randell launched here the first paddle-steamer built on the Murray, opening the river to the paddle-wheel trade that carried wool and supplies deep inland. That heritage still floats at Mannum — the 1897 paddle-steamer Marion is preserved as a working museum boat, and the big Murray Princess begins its cruises from the town wharf. Houseboats, ferries and river tourism keep the waterfront busy today, and Mannum remains one of the classic paddle-steamer towns of the Murray.
