Marryatville, SA

Marryatville is a small, gracious suburb in Adelaide's leafy eastern suburbs, a few kilometres from the city in the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters, on Kaurna country. Laid out as a village in the late eighteen-forties, it was named after Augusta Sophia Marryat, wife of an early governor of South Australia. First Creek and Second Creek, rising in the Adelaide Hills, still thread through the area, and grand nineteenth-century estates survive in everyday use: Eden Park is now part of Marryatville High School, while the Italianate mansion The Acacias belongs to Loreto College. A celebrated rose nursery once flourished beside what is now Hackett Terrace. Along Kensington Road, a small shopping precinct and the heritage former police station recall the village's origins, set among quiet, tree-lined streets.
