Mitcham (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Mitcham is an inner-southern suburb of Adelaide, the historic core of the City of Mitcham that still carries the name of its beginnings as 'Mitcham Village'. Laid out as a village distinct from Adelaide, it grew up beside a South Australia Company sheep station on Brown Hill Creek. The Kaurna people are the traditional owners of this country; a group of around 150 is recorded as having camped at Wirraparinga, the creekside ground now kept as Mitcham Reserve, which once served as the village green. In 1909 the Church of England's Orphan Home for Girls relocated to Upper Mitcham. Today the quiet, leafy suburb remains the seat of the Mitcham Council, its village character still legible in the older streets around the reserve.
