Mount Pleasant (SA), SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mount Pleasant is a country town on the edge of the Adelaide Hills and the Barossa in South Australia, about 55 kilometres east-north-east of Adelaide and a short drive from Birdwood. It was settled from 1843 by James Phillis, a farmer from Kent in England, and the township was surveyed in 1856; the name is thought to reflect either the pleasant country that reminded Phillis of home or his sister, who was named Pleasant. A railway served the town from 1918 until 1963. Heritage buildings including an 1840s farm cottage, the old police station and an 1866 church survive, and the annual Mount Pleasant Show and Saturday farmers' market remain fixtures of local life.
