Murchison (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Murchison lies on the Goulburn River in northern Victoria, roughly 167 kilometres from Melbourne and 40 kilometres from Shepparton. It was named after an early settler, Captain John Murchison; the Ngooraialum people were the Aboriginal inhabitants of the district. Squatters arrived from 1840, the township was laid out in 1854 and the post office opened in 1855. Orchards, vineyards and dairy farms surround the town, and the heritage Goulburn Weir of 1887-90 stands nearby. Murchison has two unusual claims to fame: the 1969 Murchison meteorite, a carbon-rich fall later found to contain dozens of amino acids, and a large Second World War internment camp, remembered today by the Italian Ossario at the local cemetery.
