Nagambie, VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Nagambie lies in the Goulburn Valley of central Victoria, about 120 kilometres north-east of Melbourne in the Shire of Strathbogie. It sits on the traditional lands of the Taungurung people, and the town's name comes from a local Aboriginal word meaning lagoon. European settlement grew from a river crossing on the early Melbourne to Sydney mail route, with the town surveyed in 1868 and proclaimed in 1872. Its defining feature is Lake Nagambie, an artificial lake formed when the Goulburn Weir was completed in 1891, which today hosts rowing championships and water sports. The district is a noted wine region, home to historic wineries such as Tahbilk and Mitchelton. Nagambie is also celebrated as the birthplace of the champion racehorse Black Caviar.
