Normanville (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Normanville is a coastal town on the western Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia, about 77km south of Adelaide, set near the mouth of the Bungala River on Gulf St Vincent. The town was established in 1849 by Robert Norman, said to have been South Australia's first dentist, and it carries his name; the Normanville Hotel he opened in 1851 became a meeting place for the early district council. For a time it was a wheat-exporting centre, shipping grain from a jetty, before that trade drifted away to Adelaide. Today Normanville lives mainly on tourism, with a popular beach, the historic jetty and a cluster of heritage buildings, and it sits within the Southern Fleurieu wine region.
