Pendle Hill, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Pendle Hill is a suburb in Sydney's west, about twenty-nine kilometres from the central business district, spanning the local government areas of Cumberland Council and the City of Parramatta. Before colonisation the area was home to the Dharug people. Its unusual name is thought to come from the cotton industry: George Bond, an American who settled in Australia in the early twentieth century, built a pioneering cotton-spinning and weaving business, and Pendle Hill is a landmark hill in Lancashire, the heart of England's cotton trade, which is likely where the suburb took its name. The railway station opened in 1924. In 1975 the Maltese Monument was unveiled at Civic Park, a gift from the local Maltese community to mark their contribution to New South Wales.
