Richmond (NSW), NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Richmond is a historic town on the Hawkesbury River at the foot of the Blue Mountains, about 60 kilometres north-west of central Sydney. It lies on the country of the Darug people. European farmers settled the fertile river flats from the 1790s, and Richmond became one of the five Macquarie Towns laid out under Governor Macquarie in the 1810s, taking its name from the Duke of Richmond by way of nearby Richmond Hill. The district grew into an important food bowl for the young colony. Today it is known for its Georgian and Victorian streetscapes, the long-established RAAF Base Richmond, and the Hawkesbury campus that began as an agricultural college in 1891.
