Ringwood (Vic.), VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Ringwood is an established suburb of Melbourne about twenty-five kilometres east of the city and the civic heart of the City of Maroondah. It began as farmland and grew into a recognisable village only after the 1850s land sales; the post office opened in 1875, and the arrival of the Hawthorn-to-Lilydale railway in 1882 turned it into a town. The line was electrified in 1924 and Ringwood was proclaimed a city in 1960. Its 1928 clock tower stands as a war memorial, and the Eastland centre has anchored local shopping since 1967. Ringwood has a sweet and hoppy claim to fame, too: a Cadbury factory has made Cherry Ripe bars here since 1967, while the locally bred 'Pride of Ringwood' hop flavours beers brewed around the world.
