Riverton (SA), SA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Riverton is a town in the Gilbert Valley of South Australia's Mid North, about 94 kilometres north of Adelaide on the Gilbert River. It was first settled in 1856 as a stopping place on the bullock track that carried copper and supplies between the mining town of Burra and Adelaide, and it takes its name from the river, which honours the colonial pioneer Thomas Gilbert. Riverton grew into an important railway town, and that heritage survives in its old station, now home to tea-rooms, a gallery and accommodation in restored railway carriages. The town is a trailhead for the Rattler Trail, a walking and cycling path that follows a former railway line up into the Clare Valley wine country.
