Robertson (NSW), NSW

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Robertson sits on the edge of the Illawarra escarpment in the New South Wales Southern Highlands, about 140 kilometres south-west of Sydney and a steep climb up from Wollongong on the coast below. High and green at around 730 metres, it was once called Yarrawa Bush and took its present name from Sir John Robertson, whose 1861 Land Act opened the district to selectors. Cool, wet weather long suited dairying and, later, the potato crops the town is still known for - celebrated by the Big Potato sculpture a local grower built in the 1970s. The 1995 film 'Babe' was shot nearby, and visitors come for the Robertson Pie Shop, the heritage hotel and the Illawarra Fly treetop walk.
