St Kilda is a bayside suburb of Melbourne, about 6 km south-east of the city centre in the City of Port Phillip. It is one of the city's best-known seaside and entertainment districts, home to the historic Luna Park amusement park, the 1927 Palais Theatre, and the popular St Kilda Pier and foreshore. The suburb has a long association with music, the arts and bohemian street life, focused on the cafes and shops of Acland and Fitzroy Streets. It was named in 1842 after the schooner Lady of St Kilda, which had anchored offshore; the wider area is part of the traditional Country of the Kulin nation.
