Swan Reach (SA), SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Swan Reach is a small town on the Murray River in South Australia, about 127 kilometres north-east of Adelaide, on the left bank between Blanchetown and Mannum. First settled in the 1850s, it began as the largest of several sheep and cattle stations in the area and soon became one of the colony's first riverboat ports, loading grain and wool. A state-run cable ferry still carries the road across the river, and paddle-steamers call by for tourists. Agriculture and irrigated horticulture remain important, with a large almond processing plant just out of town. In 2019 the district became part of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve, drawing stargazers, and a museum in the old school records local history.

Not yet scored
We’d rather leave these open than publish a number we can’t stand behind. Here’s where each one stands.
- Amenities & accessNot scored yet — our OpenStreetMap amenity mapping is still rolling out across suburbs.
- Green spaceNot scored yet — our OpenStreetMap green-space mapping is still rolling out across suburbs.
- TransportNot scored yet — our OpenStreetMap public-transport mapping is still rolling out across suburbs.
- SchoolsNot scored yet — school performance (ACARA / ICSEA) needs a data-reuse licence cleared before we can publish it.
- SafetyNot scored yet — Australia has no single open crime dataset and safety data carries defamation and legal care, so it is gated pending a go/no-go and will be data-only when added.
- CommunityNot scored yet — we won't reduce community to a number from a proxy. We'd rather leave it open than publish an invented value judgement.
