Tatura, VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Tatura sits in the Goulburn Valley of northern Victoria, about 167km north of Melbourne and a short drive west of Shepparton. The name comes from an Aboriginal word said to mean 'small lagoon'. Settled from the 1870s, the town grew into a hub of irrigated farming and food processing, and is still known for dairy, with Tatura Milk Industries and the headquarters of Goulburn-Murray Water based locally. During the Second World War the district became the centre of a network of internment and prisoner-of-war camps that held thousands of people; that history is remembered today at the Wartime Camps and Irrigation Museum and the German war cemetery. Each January the town hosts International Dairy Week.
