Temora, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Temora is a town in the north-eastern Riverina of New South Wales, about 418 kilometres south-west of Sydney and 85 kilometres from Wagga Wagga. The pastoralist John Donald McCansh applied the name in 1847, saying he borrowed it from a property elsewhere in the colony; the word is often linked to an Aboriginal term thought to describe a tree standing alone. The settlement began as a sheep station but was transformed by gold, with a rush from 1879 that drew more than twenty thousand people, and for a time the field yielded much of the colony's gold. Temora is best known today for its Aviation Museum, home to rare airworthy Spitfires, along with Lake Centenary, and a strong grain, wool and honey-producing district.
