Warracknabeal, VIC
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Warracknabeal is a town in the Wimmera wheat country of western Victoria, on the banks of Yarriambiack Creek about 330 kilometres north-west of Melbourne and 58 kilometres north of Horsham. The Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagik nations are the formally recognised traditional owners of the surrounding country. The town's name is believed to come from an Aboriginal expression meaning a place of big gums shading the waterhole. The Scott brothers took up the first pastoral run in the district, and a post office opened in 1861. Wheat and other grains still make it the business hub for the northern Wimmera and southern Mallee. Among its landmarks are an 1886 water tower and a farm machinery museum, and the musician Nick Cave was born here in 1957.
