Warren, NSW

Warren is a town in the Orana region of central New South Wales, set on the Macquarie River about 120km north-west of Dubbo and roughly 530km from Sydney. The district is the Country of the Ngiyambaa people, and the name is said to come from a local Aboriginal word variously rendered as 'strong' or 'substantial'. The explorer John Oxley camped nearby in 1818; Warren station was established in 1845, the town was surveyed around 1860, the post office opened in 1861 and the railway arrived in 1898. Today it is a wool and cotton centre known for its merino studs, while the nearby Burrendong Dam, completed in 1967, draws anglers and water-sports visitors.
