Wentworth (NSW), NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Wentworth sits in far south-western New South Wales at the meeting of the Darling and Murray rivers, about 1,030km from Sydney and just 34km from Mildura across the Victorian border. It was named in 1859 after the explorer and politician William Charles Wentworth; the local Moorna Post Office opened in 1855 and the town took the Wentworth name in 1860. By the 1870s it was a busy river port of several hundred people, shipping wool and supplies along the paddlesteamer trade. Today it leans on outback and river tourism, with landmarks including the 1907 paddlesteamer PS Ruby, the old Wentworth Gaol and the wind-sculpted Perry Sandhills just outside town.
