Wycheproof, VIC

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Wycheproof is a small wheat town in north-western Victoria, in the Shire of Buloke, about 276 kilometres from Melbourne and 136 kilometres north-west of Bendigo. Its name comes from an Aboriginal word said to mean 'grass on a hill', a reference to Mount Wycheproof — which, at just 148 metres, is often described as the smallest registered mountain in the world. The town grew up beside the railway after the line reached the district in 1883, and a quirk of that history survives today: grain trains still run straight down the centre of the main street. Wheat remains the mainstay of the local economy, and around 600 people call Wycheproof home.
