Ardross, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Ardross is a riverside suburb of Perth in the City of Melville, set on a peninsula that reaches into the Swan River alongside Applecross and Mount Pleasant. Its name traces back to the Scottish landowner Sir Alexander Percival Matheson, who acquired the land in 1896 and, while subdividing neighbouring Applecross, laid out Ardross Street. The street was named after either the town of Ardrossan on Scotland's west coast or Ardross Castle near Inverness, and the wider suburb later took its name from the road. The suburb's best-known landmark is Wireless Hill, the site of Western Australia's first communications radio station and now a bushland reserve celebrated for its spring wildflowers, orchids and kangaroo paws. Garden City shopping centre marks its southern edge.
