Bellevue Hill, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Bellevue Hill is one of Sydney's most prestigious harbourside suburbs, set on a ridge in the eastern suburbs about five kilometres east of the central business district, within the Municipality of Woollahra. The land was originally part of the lands of the Cadigal people. Early Irish settlers knew the area as Vinegar Hill, until Governor Lachlan Macquarie renamed it Bellevue Hill for its beautiful view. From the mid-nineteenth century, grand houses rose along the heights, among them Ginahgulla, long the home of the Fairfax family and now part of The Scots College. The extension of the tram line early in the twentieth century spurred wider development, and the suburb filled with gracious homes between the wars. Today its elite schools, including Cranbrook and The Scots College, and its sweeping harbour views mark it as one of the city's most exclusive addresses.
