Double Bay, NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Double Bay is a harbourside suburb in Sydney's east, about four kilometres from the central business district and serving as the administrative centre of the Municipality of Woollahra. Its name comes from the twin curves of the harbour shoreline between Point Piper and Darling Point, with the eastern inlet also known as Blackburn Cove. Long one of the most expensive pockets of the city, it is known for high-end fashion houses, hotels and dining, with a smart shopping quarter running along New South Head Road and the surrounding lanes. Much of the suburb's early life revolved around the Messenger family boatshed, from which the brothers rowed passengers across the harbour in the late nineteenth century. Today cafes and boutiques line Knox Street and Bay Street, and a ferry wharf offers a quick crossing to Circular Quay.
