Capella, QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Capella is a rural town in the Central Highlands of Queensland, about 52 kilometres north-north-west of Emerald. Founded on traditional Wangan land in the 1860s, it takes its name from Capella Creek, which was itself named after the bright star Capella — probably by the surveyor Charles Frederick Gregory, who laid out townships in the district after copper was found nearby. The railway and a post office both arrived in 1882, and a state school followed in 1883. Today Capella serves the surrounding grain farms and cattle stations and the coal mines to its east, and is home to the Capella Pioneer Village, whose centrepiece is one of the largest restored drop-plank homesteads in Australia.
