Chudleigh, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Chudleigh is a small farming settlement in northern Tasmania's Meander Valley, set between the Gog and Magog ranges and the Great Western Tiers about 64 kilometres west of Launceston and a short drive east of Mole Creek. The valley was long home to the Pallittorre people, who mined ochre at the nearby Toolumbunner pits in the Gog Range. European settlers arrived in the early 1830s, and an early resident, John Badcock Gardiner, named the village — probably after Chudleigh in Devon, England. Today it is best known for the Melita Honey Farm and the Trowunna Wildlife Park, a sanctuary for Tasmanian devils, and sits close to the limestone caves of Mole Creek Karst National Park. Some 200 people live there.
